A policy is built from several coverages. Here's what each one generally does, so you can decide what fits.
Liability Coverage
Bodily injury liability helps cover other people's medical bills, lost wages, and legal costs if you cause an accident. Property damage liability helps pay to repair or replace another person's car, fence, or other property. Every state sets its own minimum limits, and many drivers choose higher limits for more protection.
Collision Coverage
Collision applies when your car hits another vehicle or an object such as a guardrail or pole, regardless of who is at fault. You choose a deductible, which is the amount you pay before coverage applies. If you lease or finance your vehicle, your lender may require it.
Comprehensive Coverage
Sometimes called "other than collision" coverage. It can help with theft, vandalism, falling objects, fire, weather damage, and animal strikes. Like collision, it usually carries a deductible and is often required by lenders.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist
Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage can help when the at-fault driver has no insurance or in some hit-and-run situations. Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage helps when the other driver's limits are too low. Some states require these coverages and others let you decline them in writing.
Medical Payments / PIP
Medical payments coverage (MedPay) helps with medical and funeral expenses regardless of fault. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is broader in many states and may include lost income and essential services. PIP is required in no-fault states and optional or unavailable in others.
Rental Car Coverage
Often called rental reimbursement or transportation expense coverage. It typically pays a set daily amount up to a maximum number of days while your car is in the shop for a covered loss.
Roadside Assistance
Roadside or emergency road service is an optional add-on with many carriers. Services, distance limits, and the number of calls allowed vary by carrier and plan.
Additional Coverage Options
Depending on the carrier and state, you may be able to add gap insurance for financed vehicles, new car replacement, rideshare coverage for app-based drivers, custom parts and equipment coverage, and more. Ask us which options are available for your situation.
Coverage availability, limits, deductibles, exclusions, discounts, and pricing vary by insurance carrier, state, policy, and individual circumstances.
Pricing
What Affects Your Car Insurance Rate?
Each carrier uses its own rating formula, which is one reason prices for the same driver can differ from company to company. Common factors include:
Where you live and park your car
Your driving record and claims history
The year, make, and model of your vehicle
How much you drive and what you use the car for
The coverages, limits, and deductibles you choose
Drivers in your household and their experience
Prior insurance history, including any gaps in coverage
Credit-based insurance information, where state law allows
Discounts
Discounts You Can Ask About
Many carriers offer discounts. Which ones you can get, and how much they're worth, depends on the carrier and your state. Common examples:
Insuring more than one vehicle
Bundling auto with home or renters insurance
Safe driving or claim-free history
Good student or driver training
Paying in full or setting up automatic payments
Vehicle safety and anti-theft features
Discount availability and amounts vary by carrier, state, and policy. Not all discounts apply to all drivers.
